Raktamokshana – Ayurvedic Bloodletting Therapy

Raktamokshana, one of the five primary detoxification therapies in Ayurveda (Panchakarma), is a powerful treatment designed to remove vitiated or impure blood from the body. When toxins (Ama) and imbalanced doshas accumulate in the blood, they manifest as chronic skin conditions, joint pain, inflammation and other disorders.

Ayurveda describes two main methods:

  • Shastra-Visravana – using surgical tools or controlled incisions
  • Anushastra-Visravana – using non-surgical techniques such as leech therapy (Jalauka), cupping (Siravyadha) or needle pricking
