Vasti - Enema Therapy for Detox, Joint Health & Vata Balance

Vasti, also spelled as Basti, is one of the most powerful detoxification and therapeutic treatments in Ayurveda. As a key part of Panchakarma, it involves the administration of medicated oils or herbal decoctions into the colon through the rectum to eliminate deep-rooted toxins, regulate bowel function and balance the Vata dosha, which governs movement and neurological functions.

Unlike conventional enemas, Vasti is not merely a cleansing method. There are two primary forms of Vasti:

  • Anuvasana Vasti – Oil based enema for lubrication, nourishment and Vata pacification
  • Niruha Vasti (or Asthapana) – Decoction based enema for deep detox and cleansing

Who can benefit from Vasti?

Vasti therapy is especially recommended for conditions associated with Vata imbalance, including:

  • Chronic constipation or IBS
  • Low back pain and sciatica
  • Arthritis, gout or spondylosis
  • Neurological conditions (e.g. paralysis, multiple sclerosis)
  • Muscle wasting or joint degeneration
  • Menstrual irregularities and PCOS
  • Male and female infertility
  • Dry skin, fatigue, insomnia and aging-related concerns

Benefits of Vasti treatment

  • Removes deep-seated toxins (Ama) from the colon and tissues
  • Balances aggravated Vata dosha, the root cause of 80+ diseases
  • Enhances flexibility and mobility in joints
  • Relieves constipation and regulates bowel habits
  • Improves reproductive and hormonal health
  • Nourishes the nervous system and supports cognitive functions
  • Supports weight balance and energy levels
  • Boosts immunity and slows aging (Rasayana effect)

How Vasti treatment is performed?

  • Initial Consultation & Dosha Assessment - Our Ayurvedic doctor conducts a thorough consultation to assess your prakriti (body constitution), dosha imbalances and current health status.
  • Preparation Phase (Purvakarma) - Includes Abhyangam (oil massage) and Swedana (herbal steam) to loosen toxins before the enema.
  • Vasti Administration - Based on the condition, a specific type of Vasti is prepared and administered using a sterile, soft catheter. The patient lies on their left side and the medicine is gently introduced into the rectum.
